2025 Oberndorf AI Medical Scholar Awardee, Anjali Patel

The University of Florida’s (UF) Intelligent Critical Care Center (IC3) and the College of Medicine Office of Research are pleased to announce MIRTHAI research volunteer, Anjali Patel, as being one of three awardees for the competitive Oberndorf AI Medical Scholars Award. Congratulations, Anjali!

This initiative has been offered to inspire creativity, foster impactful contributions, and ensure feasibility in proposed project ideas, with the intent of significantly contributing to a difference in patient care, diagnostics, research, and healthcare management. Generous donations from Louis H. and Rosemary Oberndorf are offered in an attempt to create a collaborative environment where the intersection of medical knowledge and AI innovation can be led by experienced UF researchers, thereby increasing research capabilities and readiness of medical students for the future of their careers.

Anjali’s proposal titled, “Developing AI-Powered Image Segmentation Software for Enhanced Carotid MRI Interpretation” aims to address one of the world’s leading causes of morbidity, Cardiovascular Disease (CVD). Her approach to developing an AI tool to accurately segment and map plaque accumulation in the carotid arteries has the potential to enable clinicians to visualize early markers of CVD and intervene at earlier stages. In addition to earlier intervention, Anjali hopes to lay the foundations for improving patient outcomes of those who can be diagnosed in the early stages of CVD. Beneath the watchful eye of AI expert, Dr. Wei Shao, there is much promise for developing such a tool!
